The top three models on Consumer Reports new list of the "top 12 gas savers" are hybrids: Toyota Prius, Honda Civic hybrid and Toyota Camry hybrid.
But the rest run on gasoline.
"In our testing ,we found that there are some non-hybrid models that do pretty darn well," said Jim Travers, an associate editor at Consumer Reports.
These include some new sub-compacts and sports cars, such as the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit and the Mazda3.
"The mileage difference between a hybrid and a similar gasoline model that is something like an Ford Escape hybrid as opposed to the gas version, or a Honda Civic hybrid as opposed to the gas version, said Travers.
If you're looking at a payoff for the difference in gas mileage, Travers says it'll usually take anywhere from 2 to 7 years.
"Some cars it takes quiet a bit more than 7 before you pay off the difference in the cost of the vehicle, because, of course, the hybrids are more expensive going in," he said.
But hybrids do pollute less, so they're better for the environment.
